2021/22 Racing Season

We have come to the end of another successful racing season and finished 2021/22 with 24 winners, 34.5 seconds and 29.5 thirds. We also had 29 fourths and 39 fifth placings meaning 55.3% of our starters finished in the first 5..

Whilst our total number of winners was down slightly on last year, our total prizemoney was significantly higher at $1,238,245 (and we had a large number of near misses with many close 2nds!!!).

We had our most successful season so far in the metropolitan area which showcases our aim to keep improving the quality of horses in the stable. We had 5 metropolitan winners including our first black type success with Monegal taking out the Group 3 Epona Stakes. The Guru won twice in the metropolitan area whilst Monegal and Divine Breath added further successes. To top it off we also had eight city placings!

Our winning jockeys for the season were:

  • Jess Taylor (8 wins),
  • Brock Ryan (7)
  • Robyn Freeman-Key (2),
  • Molly Bourke (2),
  • Michael Travers (1),
  • Sam Clipperton (1),
  • Kyla Nisbet (1),
  • Rachel King (1) and
  • Madison Waters (1).

Our stable stars for the season were:

  • Monegal (3 wins including the Epona Stakes and Canberra Mile)
  • Crackalacka (3),
  • The Guru (2),
  • Victory At Omaha (2),
  • Moon Stories (2),
  • Maddison’s Missile (2),
  • Real Key (1),
  • Freaky Freckles (1),
  • Shaka Rock (1),
  • Stryke Em Onesie (1),
  • Divine Breath (1),
  • Steve Steve Steve (1),
  • Eberlee (1),
  • Redente Choice (1) and
  • My Alma (1).

Our highlights for the season were stable star Monegal who as a 6 year old had her best season, winning 3 races including the Group 3 Epona Stakes and Canberra Mile, a winning double on The Gong race day at Kembla courtesy of The Guru and Divine Breath, getting a slot in the inaugural $700,000 Four Pillars finishing 3rd with Divine Breath and claiming honours in the Sapphire Coast Trainers Premiership for the 4th time in the past 5 seasons!!!

We also thoroughly enjoyed the two day Bega Cup carnival with a large contingent of owners heading down to Merimbula for the weekend. I will never forget the loudness of the cheering when Alan won the Bateup Racing Handicap and the handbag that went flying through the air!!!!). We look forward to another great weekend at the carnival next year.

We love the fun and interest our owners get from their horses. Alan’s famous “handbag” win at the Bega Cup Carnival says it all.

We have welcomed many new owners and horses to the Bateup Racing Family. We thank everyone for their continued support of the stable and look forward to another successful season ahead!!!
