May Highlights

It has been a quieter month on the racing front; however, those who have been at the races performed well.

The recent rain has played havoc with planning. We saw meetings abandoned or rescheduled and programs changed. This often requires last-minute decisions, and we appreciate our owners’ patience and understanding as we wait on track updates, scratchings and the status of meetings.

Yes Arnie and Brannum both went very close to winning this month, putting in courageous efforts to finish 2nd.  Arnie showed great tenacity at Sapphire Coast, fighting all the way home in the long straight to go down narrowly. Brannum also produced a gutsy effort at Hawkesbury, performing well above market expectations when beaten a long neck. He has been a model of consistency since joining the stables with 2 x 2nd and 2 x 3rd placings from 5 starts.

Hunter One is doing a great job this preparation and performed admirably when stepping up to a Benchmark 68 at Kembla Grange and finishing 3rdLandmark Lady kept working to the line well to finish 3rd at Canberra on the Acton track on the 22nd MayLondon Star has also been racing well without much luck. She put in another honest performance, finishing 3rd at Nowra on the 24th May on a Heavy track.

Sablonneuse backed up his great 4th in the Wagga Guineas with a solid showing when stepping up to metro grade at Warwick Farm and finishing 4th over 1600m. Freddie keeps improving and is now ready to step up in trip further. Farsain was also a good effort, finishing 4th in a Super Maiden at Moruya.

We’ve had several horses at the trials and jump-outs this month and moving into next month. This includes a lot of our 2-year-olds and unraced horses. We appreciate the efforts of Jess Taylor, Amy McLucas and Brock Ryan in being a vital part of the education process of these horses when riding them in jump outs.

A number of our new yearlings completed their breaking-in preparations, with a couple more heading to the breakers over the next couple of weeks. We are very impressed with the breaking-in jobs done by Woodlow Equine and Luke Morgan.

Our racing team will start to build up again during the next month, and we look forward to seeing the continued development and progression of these horses.

Racing Reports

Brannum stepped up to 1900m at Newcastle on 2 May and overdid things in front. Coming back to 1600m at Hawkesbury, he produced a very good performance to finish 2nd, beaten only a neck. Noodle has been consistent since joining the stable and is appreciating the wet tracks. Hopefully, he finds himself in the winners’ stall shortly and is likely to race at Kembla on the 3rd June.

Hunter One stepped up to 1200m at Wagga on the 30th April in a strong line-up. From the inside barrier, Justine settled behind the leaders. There was a gap on the fence in the straight that she wouldn’t quite take. Even so, she kept trying to finish 3rd. Justine then lined up at Kembla Grange on the 16th May, stepping up to Benchmark 68 grade, where she more than held her own, finishing a solid 3rd placing.

London Star has been in work for quite a while but continues to race well. Following 2 luckless runs at Wagga and Moruya, London was very brave in heavy conditions at Nowra on the 24th May when finishing 3rd.

Landmark Lady was not suited by a slow tempo and a sit and sprint at Kembla on the 16th May. However, she produced a tough effort at the Canberra Acton track on the 22nd May when finishing 3rd. Despite making a long, sustained run, Pisa kept working to the line and will possibly return to the Acton track on the 12th June.

Sablonneuse delivered a fantastic performance in the Wagga Guineas. Going back to last from the outside barrier, Freddie pinched runs up the inside and hit the line strongly to finish 4th. He then went to Warwick Farm over 1600m and was very brave, finishing 4th again, beaten just over 2 lengths. Freddie is racing like he wants further and at this stage may step up to 2000m at Randwick on 6th June.

Farsain produced a solid effort at Moruya on the 10th May when finishing 4thin a Super Maiden over 1200m. Fairy is now enjoying a spell and will return stronger again next preparation.

Lantau Island has been racing well and has enjoyed finding wet tracks at recent starts. At Taree Lenny settled well back but worked home solidly over 1400m. He then went to Nowra on the 24th May and was an unlucky 5th. After being held up around the home turn, he kept winding up and finding the line. With an uninterrupted run, he probably should have finished 3rd. Lenny is racing like he’ll get over further. He was to have lined up at Goulburn on the 29th over 1600m, but the meeting was abandoned so he will now go to Kembla on the 3rd June over 1500m

Yes Arnie was just run down at Sapphire Coast on the 3rd May when fighting determinedly down the straight. Arnie then ventured to Taree, where he struck a Heavy track but put in an honest performance once again, finishing 4th.

Starsonus made his return to the races after 47 weeks with a solid effort over 1200m at Kembla on the 16th May. Tyson was then fair at Illawarra Grange on the 30th May over 1400m when beaten only 3.9 lengths. He will improve again off that outing.

Bikini Babe has not been to the races this month due to a lack of suitable races. She had a tick over jump out on the 25th May and will be back at the races in the first week of June

  • Mr Bazza is a 4yo gelding by Lord of the Sky that has raced 7 times for 2 placings. Baz recently joined the stable and has settled in well.
  • Leica Fox will be joining the stable. He is a good looking 2 yo gelding by Zousain out of Purr Itty Kitty, which makes him a half-brother to Kitty Okay. Leica Fox has had a preparation with Nathan Doyle and is now spelling before he commences work with us. There are limited opportunities to get involved in Leica Fox.
  • In The Congo x That’s Amore yearling colt. A beautifully bred colt and quite the looker with his flaxen mane. He has a great attitude, has been well handled and is ready to head to the breakers shortly. There are ownership opportunities available in this colt.
  • Brutal / All Too Rio yearling colt. A good-bodied colt that will continue to mature. He will head to the breakers in the near future. Brutal is doing a great job at stud. He’s in this season’s list of Australian sires with 50+ winners and has got there with fewer runners than any of his contemporaries. Ownership opportunities are available in this colt.
