July newsletter

Bateup Racing finished off the 2024 /2025 racing season in great style with an impressive race-to-race double at Sapphire Coast, followed by a very close 2nd at Warwick Farm with Tartana on 30th July.

Sir Sublime controlled the race throughout and was rated perfectly by Brock Ryan when leading all the way to win over 1600m at Sapphire on 27 July. In the next race, London Star finally broke through for a well-deserved win and she didn’t muck about, winning in slashing style. She demolished her opposition by 5 ¼ lengths when ridden by Shaun Guymer.

Tartana has been frustrating and it has been a difficult job trying to get her feet right. But we finally got her back to the races and despite the dreary conditions and deteriorating track, Dolly showed she was back to her best with a hard fought 2nd placing for Molly Bourke beaten only a neck.

Sandbar 2yo geldings, Sablonneuse and Brundee Tom both ran 3rd in their respective races at Sapphire Coast at only their second race starts. Both look quite promising.

New acquisition to the stables, Miss Bariloche debuted with a solid effort to finish 3rd at Sapphire Coast.

We are looking forward to the new racing season as we have a number of horses nearing a return to the races including Master Riley and Direct Fire. A number of our young horses are also getting ready to trial and make their race debut.

Another year has gone by and our horses celebrated their birthday on the 1st August!

Racing Reports

London Star is a very tough, consistent mare. She has been in work for a good while but thrives on her racing.

She ran a very good 2nd in a Super Maiden at Moruya on the 11th July then finally broke through for a well-deserved and well overdue win at Sapphire Coast. Ridden by Shaun Guymer, London was travelling strongly around the home turn and cruised up to the leaders. She then extended to run away and win by 5 ¼ lengths.

London reminds me a lot of another honest mare previously in the stable, Hope Uno. It took Hope until start 15 to break through for her Maiden. But with that out of the way she went on to win a total of 5 races and $179k in prizemoney. We have London’s yearling half-sister by Prized Icon in the paddock and shares are available in this filly.

Sir Sublime was a sound effort second up at Kembla over 1300m. He then stepped up to 1600m at Sapphire Coast on the 27th July where he jumped well, went straight to the lead and controlled the race throughout. Well rated by Brock Ryan, Stubby relaxed in front then increased the tempo from the 600m. Despite being open to improvement, he won comfortably by 1 ¼ lengths.

Stubby has always shown ability but has taken a little while to mature mentally. He now looks in for a good preparation. The win saw Stubby equal with two others for Horse of the Year honours at Sapphire Coast but he was runner up on a count back. Stubby is likely to head to Goulburn on the 11th August.

Tartana is finally back at the races and what a performance she delivered at Warwick Farm on the 30th July. Not having raced for 14 weeks Dolly was always going to improve off the run, especially when striking a deteriorating Heavy 9 track first up over 1300m. Ridden by Molly Bourke, Dolly travelled nicely behind the leaders; cut the corner; straighened up in front and then gave a good kick. Whilst getting tired late, Dolly fought on tenaciously to hold 2nd beaten only a neck. Already a mid-week city winner we look forward to seeing what Dolly can progress to now that her feet are right. .

Sablonneuse debuted with a solid performance in a Super Maiden over 1200m at Moruya on the 11th July finishing 4th. Freddie then lined up at Sapphire Coast on the 27th July and despite having a tough run in transit was another good effort to finish 3rd behind stablemate, London Star. Freddie has a great attitude and will continue to improve with each start.

Brundee Tom debuted at Gosford in a Super Maiden over 1200m and got a bit lost early in the race but finished off well. Tommy took good improvement out the race experience and in a Super Maiden at Sapphire Coast on the 27th, July hit the line very strongly to finish 3rd.

Kickamushu ran a super race at Sapphire Coast on the 8th June to come from well back in the field from a wide barrier and wound up strongly to finish a close 2nd. Mushu then raced a bit flat at Nowra on the 17th June and is now enjoying a spell.

Miss Bariloche is a new addition to the stable having previously raced in Victoria. Miss B had her first run for us at Sapphire Coast on the 27th July and it was a very pleasing effort. She finished nicely from the rear of the field to finish 3rd. Miss B is being aimed towards the Cootamundra Cup in October.

Landmark Lady has put two nice runs under her belt so far this preparation and will enjoy stepping up to 1400m next start. Pisa was an eye catching effort first up at Moruya where she went back from a wide barrier and finished strongly to run 5th. She also did a good job 2nd up in a Super Maiden over 1200m at Sapphire Coast where she again kept working to the line just missing 4th place.

Victory at Omaha had a short freshen up and returned to the races in July at Moruya producing a solid effort over 1435m. He then led and gave a sight over 1660m second up, just getting tired late. Bro is likely to head to Canberra on the 8th August over 1750m on the Acton track.

Rubilace is finally starting to get her racing manners right. Anna all but won at Sapphire Coast on the 8th June in a Super Maiden over 1200m in a very deceptive photo finish. She followed that up with another solid performance at Moruya on the 27th June finishing 3rd. Anna had a long and interrupted preparation and is now having a break.

Edorado made his race debut at Warwick Farm on a very heavy track. Eddie couldn’t pick his feet up in the conditions however handled himself quite professionally. He then had 2 starts at Kembla Grange where he was far from disgraced. Eddie will relish stepping up in distance next preparation and is now having a break.

Pitch ‘N Toss has returned from a long layoff with two sound efforts. In the latest, she finished 5th at Sapphire Coast. Winnie will be at her best as she steps up in distance and has matured with time.

Machination tried hard in his races but did not make the grade and has now commenced his new career in show jumping.  He has such a great attitude and is a very cool dude. We look forward to following his progress off the track and may hopefully see him competing at Equimillions in October.

Prized Rose has moved on and will continue the next phase of her career as a show pony.
