Edging ever so closer to 250 career wins (currently 247), Theresa Bateup landed her second victory of the 2025/26 season when training the quinella of the 1660m Benchmark 58 Handicap at Moruya on Tuesday.
A gutsy Sir Sublime (Pierre Boudvillain) led them up in the final event of the card, before Miss Bariloche (Jess Taylor) stormed home to land the one-length win and secure the stable quinella.
Formerly trained by Matt Cumani and then Andrew Bobbin, the 6YO Husson mare had spent her career in Victoria before a recent move to Bateup’s Kembla Grange stable after being picked up in the June 2025 Inglis Digital online sale for only $9,000.
A first-up third in the 1400m Benchmark 66 Handicap at the Sapphire Coast on July 27 was a sign of things to come, and while Miss Bariloche didn’t appreciate the wet tracks at Goulburn and Wagga recently, back on top of the ground, we saw the best of her at Moruya.
The win is a good one for owner Tony Ryals of Dubbo (formerly of Cootamundra, like Theresa), who’s hoping to find his next Cootamundra Cup candidate.
Earlier on the eight-race program, the Bateup-trained Lady Yarrow (Jess Taylor, $1.65) finished a good second in the 1210m Maiden Plate.
The 4YO Shalaa mare raced in third in the early stages as the Ross McConville-trained Thaibeefsalad (Adrian Layt, $13) led the field along at a good clip, ahead of the Matthew Dale-trained Dooralong (Louise Day, $4.40).
Lady Yarrow worked to second and found the line nicely, finishing second behind Dooralong.
The Bateup Racing team will now look ahead to meetings at Canberra on Friday, Wagga on Saturday, and Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
