Bateup racing is delighted to offer multiple ownership opportunities after attending the Inglis 2021 Classic Yearling Sale.
What economic downturn? The horse market is booming.
The average for Book 1 of this year’s Classic Sale was up 20% to $102,421. Not to be outdone, the Highway Session average rose 30% to $48,736
Despite this, after inspecting around 350 yearlings and waiting patiently for opportunities, I came away from the sale with two nice colts that I think represent very good value.
We have also been able to secure a lovely Invader filly that was passed in through the ring. She too represents excellent value.– Theresa Bateup
There are opportunities to join us racing these horses.
Headwater x Starovski Colt
– Stable name “Ken”

This colt reminded me a lot of The Guru when we purchased him as a yearling.
My inspection notes were:
“Nice size, good type, athletic, good gaskin and forearm, good head and eye, good over step, nice horse.
He is “low risk” on x-rays and passes the scope.
Headwater
The Headwater progeny are going very well on the track and I have been a fan of the Headwater’s that I have seen at the sales.
The statistics bear this out. Headwater currently ranks 3rd by number of winners for second season sires’ and fourth by earnings on $1.24m
Starovski and female line
Ken’s dam is by the international, Group 1 winner and succesful stallion, Starcraft.
Starcraft was a very good looking horse and was known for getting some great types. Heis the sire, amongst others, of the handsome Star Witness and his equally handsome son, Star Turn. Physically, there is a lot of Starcraft about Ken.
The first 3 dams in Starovski’s pedigree have all produced stakes horses.
Starovski’s first foal by Rubick is a 3 year old and is in work with Nat McCall in Queensland. Her second foal is a full sister to Ken by Headwater. She was sold for $80,000 and is currently in work with Matt Dunn at Warwick Farm.
Pedigree Notes
Starcraft who stood for some time at Arrowfield stud, nicked well with Danehill and his sons. Ken’s pedigree contains this pattern with 2 crosses of Danehill through his sons Exceed and Excel and Rock of Gibraltar.

Shalaa x Chimerique Colt
– Stable name “Ace”

This colt is quite immature (being a November foal). However, he appealed to me as soon I saw him and was one that I kept coming back to thinking he may represent great value being late in the sale and still immature in comparison to most presented at the sale.
My inspection notes were:
“Smaller type (November foal, still immature but will develop nicely with time), good length, athletic, good gaskin, clean legs, great walker and good over step, sweet head, great attitude. Overall a neat athletic horse that will develop nicely.”
He is “low risk” on x-rays and passes the scope.
Shalaa
Blueblood stallion, Shalaa was the top rated 2 year old in England and France in 2015 when he won 5 of his 6 starts including 2 at Group 1 level.
He stands at Arrowfield Stud on a fee or $33000 and his first Australian crop are off to a very promising start with Shaquero winning this year’s Magic Millions Classic.

Chimerique and female line
Ace comes from a strong family, littered with black type winners.
His dam Chimerique is a proven broodmare. She has so far had 4 winners including 2 city winners at Randwick and Hong Kong.
He comes from the same family as our Super One filly Superdini with his grand dam being the mother of VRC Oaks winner Bulla Borghese.
Pedigree Notes
Shalaa’s Dad was Invincible Spirit whose sire line has emerged as a dominant force in recent years. Invincible Spirt himself sired the winners of $119m including 131 stakes winners.
Ace’s pedigree features the cross of an Invincible Spirit line stallion (Shalaa) and a Danehill line mare (Chimerique). This has been a highly influential nick in world breeding in recent years. An example is the outstanding success of I Am Invincible in Australia with its heavy concentration of Danehill line mares.

Invader x Snow Robin Filly
– Stable name “Dolly”

This filly is also a November foal and will continue to develop and grow into a lovely type.
My inspection notes were:
A smaller type, still close in front however will widen as she matures, neat body, good gaskin, not as “prepped up” for the sales as some presented by the bigger vendors, nice head, racy type.”
This filly is a bit behind some of the others (being a later foal), however has the scope to develop and will grow into a lovely athletic filly”
She is “low risk” on x-rays and passes the scope.
Ivader
I am a huge fan of the Invader progeny and am impressed with how he stamps them.
I am not the only one thinking this. Invader has been one of the talking points of this year’s sales. He is throwing “trainers’ types” that typically have a fluid walk with big over step and plenty of power, just like their sire.
Invader was the2nd leading first season sire by average price at the Classic Sale. His yearlings averaged $133,500 with a top price of $375,000.
Invader, by Champion sire Snitzel, won the Group 1 Sires Produce at Randwick over 1400m. Unluckily scratched from the Golden Slipper due to a stone bruise, he blitzed them in the Sires Produce.
Snow Robin
Dolly’s dam, Snow Robin was blessed with a lot of speed, winning 3 from 860m – 1030m. Dolly is her 2nd foal.
Pedigree Notes
Starcraft who stood for some time at Arrowfield stud, nicked well with Danehill and his sons. Ken’s pedigree contains this pattern with 2 crosses of Danehill through his sons Exceed and Excel and Rock of Gibraltar.
