Theresa Bateup

From a very young age, Theresa Bateup had a great love for horses. Whilst growing up in NSW Country town Cootamundra, Theresa would keep a scrapbook filled with photographs, newpaper articles, pedigrees and form of all the horses racing in Sydney each Saturday. She would keep the scrapbook updated after every weekend of racing. This love for horses shaped her decision to undertake work experience with the Australian Jockey Club in Year 10 and help out with stable duties for a local trainer during the school holidays.

Theresa moved to Wollongong to complete a Bachelor of Commerce and during this time continued to learn more about race horses completing trackwork and strapping for a number of local trainers at Kembla Grange.

At the same time Theresa was showing horses with success winning numerous Supreme’s and Champions with her Purebred Arabian gelding, Moongalba Raalik (culminating in an Australian Championship title in 2002 and 2 Australian Young Adult Judging Championships.

After obtaining her Trainer’s licence in 2002, Theresa tasted early success turning the fortunes of tried horses around, watching them thrive in the new relaxed environment and high level of care on offer at the Kembla Grange stables. Casiraghi, her first winner, was purchased for $250 as an out of form 8 year-old who went on to win races until he was 11 and was the stable lead pony for a number of years.

Over the years, Theresa has developed a reputation for picking potential in a horse leading to highly successful careers including Fleeting Stryke ($120,000 prizemoney purchased for $2000), Burden of Proof (over $100,000 in prizemoney and purchased for $3000) and Sunday Poet registering 2 wins from 3 starts to date.

In november 2021, Theresa Bateup was fortunate to catch up with John Tapp. Listen below:

Theresa’s strength in the Country scene has been a highlight achieving back-to-back trainers premierships at the Sapphire Coast in 2017/18 and 18/19 whilst finishing in the top 3 at Nowra in 2017/18. Jarrett was named Horse of the Year at Sapphire Coast in 2017/18 whilst Zariz Alwyns (who came to the stable as a Maiden after 18 starts) won the Horse of the Year title at Nowra in 2017/18. Monegal made it two Horse of the Year awards for the stable after claiming the honours at Sapphire Coast in 2018/19 and winning the Bega Cup in 2020.

Theresa’s style is best encapsulated by her treatment and love for horses. She possesses a keen eye on their health and mannerisms of each horse showing great attention to detail on all aspects of their development.

Her ‘down to earth’ and approachable style extends to the team’s relationship with the owners. Theresa prides herself on treating all owners equally and providing honest news on their horses progress and racing strategy. She believes owners should enjoy the thrill of owning a racehorse and are always welcome at the stables to meet their pride and joy.

Theresa’s pursuit for success is just getting started as she actively pursues high quality yearlings at the Inglis Sales and Magic Millions.
