Bargain buys headline Provincials

A team of bargain buys will carry the hopes of Theresa Bateup in Saturday’s Sky Racing Summer Provincial Series – Heat 1 Class 5 Plate (1400m) at Kembla Grange.

The Kembla Grange trainer has four runners in the first heat of the Provincial series, with Golly I’m Lucky, Fleeting Stryke, Titaness and Taqueda all set to take part.

Three of the four horses are bargain buys for Bateup and cost a combined total of less than $10,000 while Golly I’m Lucky is a homebred. Fleeting Stryke ($2000) and Taqueda ($3000) were picked up from the Inglis Scone Yearling Sale and Titaness ($4000) was purchased in an online sale.

Victory on Saturday would comfortably cover all of those price tags combined and ensure the winner books a spot in the series final next month.

Bateup struggled to split a pair of her runners when discussing her chances in the race. “There is not much between Fleeting Stryke and Golly I’m Lucky,” she said. “Fleeting Stryke is coming back from a long layoff with tendon injury and I was pleased with her last start. She gets in beautifully at the weights and Cejay Graham stays on.

“I can’t remember the last time she carried that little weight. “I wouldn’t dismiss Golly I’m Lucky either. He is still a bit immature and a work in progress but he can rattle off some good sectionals when he wants to.

“If there is a bit of speed in the race, his best will see him fighting out the finish in this.”

Bateup’s other two chances, Taqueda and Titaness, are half-sisters and are both outside chances to win the heat. Taqueda is first-up from a spell while Titaness is coming off a runner-up finish in a benchmark 66 at Muswellbrook.

“Titaness has been a shade disappointing this prep but was better last start,” Bateup said. “I was going to go to Port Macquarie but with the fires we thought why not just have a crack at his home track. “It is hard to find races with her and Taqueda but both aren’t useless on their day.

“Taqueda is first-up over 1400m here but that’s her pet distance so hopefully she can run well.”

Troy Phillips pilots Taqueda, Ashley Morgan is on Titaness, Jess Taylor rides Golly I’m Lucky and apprentice Cejay Graham is aboard Fleeting Stryke.
The Summer Provincial Series opening heat will be run and won at 4.44pm.
